The Interview 1

The Interview

Introduction
Interview technique is  aimed at a fair assessment of personality traits of an individual .Written examination test the knowledge of the facts ,intellectual ability and the attainment but the interview probes deep into the personality of the candidates .
What is an interview?
The oxford dictionary defines an interview as a face to face meeting ,especially for the purpose of obtaining  a statement or for assessing the qualities of the candidate .Interview is derived from the French Word entrevoir which means glimpse. It is ,therefore ,an interaction between two or more persons for a specific purpose.
Interview is a face to face interpersonal role in which the interviewer ask the candidate selected set of  questions in order to assess his suitability of admissions ,recruitment or promotion or to know logically the ability of the candidates if he/she suits for the job applied for .It is a psychological and sociological instrument .  It is a systematic method to contact with a person to know his views .In ssb ,it is regarded as the most effective tool for collection of data to arrive at the reasonable assessment of a candidate ‘s personality .
INTERVIEWER  AT SSB
Interview at ssb is called the President’s Interview merely because of the fact that it is taken up by the president of the ssb or by the deputy president of the ssb .Although the interviewing officer may have casually observed the candidate during the gto  tasks ,the observations and assessment is done purely on the individual performance during the interview.
In armed forces ,associated with the Intelligence tests, protective technique and gto tasks ,personal interview has proved quite useful in assessing the personality of the candidates .The presiding officer notes points of interest and gaps and description in information provided in the questionnaire ,which the candidates fill up on the first day.On this basis ,he attempts to assess in which direction the candidates  shows actual or potential interest and weakness .
REQUIREMENT AT SSB
Candidate being interviewed at SSB is not supposed to be very intelligent and an allrounder. In fact he is supposed to possess average intelligence  with other objective ,subject knowledge, self confidence and mental alertness fully balanced .The ssb is looking for the candidates who could be brought a balanced and intelligent gentleman by providing training.

SSB A STRESS INTERVIEW
SSB is a  stress interview for the following reasons
1)Being asked more than one question at a time.
2)Having his feelings provoked .
3)Being asked an unrelated bunch of questions .
4)Being asked in an interrogatory voice and tone.

TYPE OF QUESTIONS ASKED IN SSB
1)Leading questions
2)Open –Ended Questions
3)Probing questions
4)Close Ended questions

·       LEADING QUESTIONS –Normally an interview beings with leading questions .Such questions help a candidate to feel comfortable and confident to do well .The purpose of asking these questions is to make  the candidate feel at ease .The questions may relate with family background or education .
·       Open Ended Questions –Once the candidate has made himself comfortable ,the process of interview advances with open ended questions put to the candidate.Such questions let the interviewee deliever more information about himself and his achievements .
·       Probing Questions –Since an interview is an assessment of the total personality of the candidate .It is essential on the part of the interview to explore the implications of the behavorial pattern of the candidates right from the moment of his entrance in the interview hall. His disposition and other personality parameters are kept on a close scrutiny .
·       Close Ended Questions –The probing questions are followed by close ended questions which are primarily intended to seek information on specific items and to test your knowledge of facts and figures

Self Description

INTRODUCTION
The self descriptive technique also known as the self story writing or self appraisal is another effective and powerful tool in the hands of the psychologists to obtain the confirmation on the findings already recording candidates personality traits .In this test ,candidate Is required to describe about himself his merits demerits and what his friends and others may think about him.
The AIM
The basic intention to employ this technique is to give a chance to the candidate to reveal his own personality or character to the psychologist .Secondly ,it shows whether the candidate has a fair of insight In himself .If he knows himself and is conscious of his weakness ,he will get rid of some of these and improve his personality But if he does not have a fair insight into his own character how can he be expected to improve his own personality ?
Procedure
The self story writing or self appraisal exercise as a task proper ,is generally given to the candidate as the last terms in the psychological test .The time given is about 15 minute .Here an opportunity is given to candidate to write anything he wishes without being questioned .He can mention his strengths ,achievements and other special qualities to give a high profile projection of his personality .besides the normal method of writing one owns assessment of oneself ,the ssb’s also adopt another method of giving the test .They ask the candidates to write their own opinion about themselves by their parents ,friends and teachers .
Importance of the test .
The importance of the test cannot be over emphasized .The psychologist will confirm his observations about the candidate and his appraisal and form an important base in the interview .Everybody has some strong and some weak points and there is no restriction in highlighting his weakness alongwith with his good qualities ,it will give a true picture about himself .The best way to describe himself is to be true and faithful about himself .Therefore he should be no overestimate and under estimate of his personality.
IMPORTANT POINTS
1)Do no waste time in describing your place of birth ,home ,school ,etc at length .The emphasis should be on such factors which will provide some data regarding your personal traits .
2)Give your strong and weak points ,do not refer to your likes and dislikes  .There is no need for you to write about your likes and dislikes at some length .
3)Give correct and accurate information.
4)Prepare in advance and get sufficient practice  by writing again and again .

TAT-Thematic Appreciation Test

INTRODUCTION
It is one of the effective methods of projective techniques used by the psychologist in order to reveal a great deal's of one's personality .The technique employed is that  in the interpretation of an ambiguous situation a person will reveal hidden aspects of his thoughts .From this interpretation of the individual an appraisal of his personality is measured .The intentions of the test is to ask the candidate to give an appreciation of his own qualities without being consious to it being a very short time But in its wider sense ,it means attributing to the external world any quality of the self.

Thematic appreciation test consist of series of standard pictures which are shown to the candidate for a short time and his thoughts and reactions are collected to this stimulus in the form of a story .From this story the assessment of his personality is drawn by the psychologist .

Procedure.
About 12 pictures slides are shown to the candidates in succession .Each slide is kept displayed for 30 seconds and 4 minutes time is given to form a story on the basis of the picture shown to the candidate .Every picture shown has a reaction which gives base to the story .Story is nothing but its the candidates reaction to the stimulus .The story provides valuable clues about the emotional attitude and temperamental make up .

RULES
1)11 pictures+one blank story .
2)Time -30 seconds for the projection of the picture and 3-4 minutes for writing the story.

Technique
There are two characters in the story one is the main character of the story that is the hero and other are the characters that play the supporting role or helping role .
Story should have three parts -
1What led to the situation?
2)What is happening at the moment ?
3)What is the final outcome ?
In the opening part ,a need or problem or challenge is presented and along with the identification of the hero the aim of the hero is given .In this part it is told whether the hero is a college student ,an officer or an buisnessman and what he has to do .It should be given in 2-4 lines of the story .

The middle part is the most important of all .In this part all the actions of the hero are given .The efforts or steps he takes ,the methods he adopts and his journey to achieve the aim ,all these things are given in this part .This part reflects the picture that means what is shown to the candidate .A candidate must write much more in  this part to what is happening at the moment .

The end part reflects the final outcome .It shows the result of hero's efforts and the level of satisfaction as he is satisfied to serve the country .It can definetly define the future of the hero in one or two lines .

KEEP IN MIND
1)There is no villain in the story.
2)Hero should lead the story ,side characters are just good followers .
3)Do not give any heading or title to the story.
4)Handwriting should be legible .
5)Convert a negative picture into positive one .
6)Do not describe what you see in the picture but express your thoughts that come your way .
